Experimental validation of finite element models of intact and implanted composite hemi-pelvises using digital image correlation
Significance of output:
This paper demonstrates the first use of novel non-contact strain monitoring techniques on implanted artificial pelvises to assess the effect of a hip implant on the surrounding bone. The computer modelling verification methods developed in this study are now being applied in several industrial funded projects in the UK, Germany and France with Simpleware, Fraunhofer IPA and CETIM respectively. In addition, the work underpins a recently awarded EPSRC programme in performance prediction of implanted knees. A collaborating company, Aurora Medical Ltd, now use these methods as standard as part of their implant design and evaluation process.
