Deep sequencing of tomato short RNAs identifies microRNAs targeting genes involved in fruit ripening
<28> MicroRNAs are an important class of molecules that regulate gene expression by modulating stability of their target messenger RNAs and the rate at which they are translated. We provide a detailed application of a novel computational approach called miRCat that we developed for identifying microRNAs in next generation sequencing data. It uses a search algorithm based on secondary structure prediction. miRCat is publicly available for download as part of the BBSRC-funded “UEA sRNA Workbench”, published as an application note (Bioinformatics, 2012, 28 (15): 2059-2061) and downloaded over 3,700 times as of July 2013.
