Additional information

<24> This paper proposes a new computational data mining method for the challenging bioinformatics problem of predicting hierarchical protein functions (i.e. functions organized in a hierarchy from more generic to more specific functions) based on physicochemical properties of the sequence of amino acids of proteins. It received the best paper award in the conference, out of 63 papers submitted to peer-review. The research described in this paper was extended in two journal papers (Journal of Artificial Evolution and Applications, 2008; Soft Computing, 2009) and a highly-cited survey paper published in the Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery journal, 2011.
