Additional information

The paper presents research on the practical optimisation of MEMS sensors operating with parametric amplification, with the underlying physics of parametric excitation analysed in detail in order that its effect can be exploited in micro-resonant sensor technologies. Amplification of the dynamic response by two orders of magnitude is demonstrated practically. Use of the dynamic properties of axisymmetric structures in sensing applications is being further researched within the EPSRC project “High Frequency Degenerate Mode Acoustic Sensors” (EP/K000349/1; £777k).
