Additional information

This paper presents the first in depth study of the performance of inorganic fullerene-like nanoparticles as a surface coating in gears. The results show that the coated gears improve performance, and the mechanism of that improved performance is explained. The research was carried out with EC funding (Fullerene-based opportunities for robust engineering: making optimised surfaces for tribology; 515840; Newcastle award £392k), and the coating material is being further developed by Ionbond (contact: Peter Hatto, peter.hatto@ionbond.com).
