Additional information

Atomic Force Microscopy has been a key instrument in nanoscience for many years, but measuring pico or nanonewton forces (e.g. to compare the mechanics of individual molecules with theory) has been prone to errors. This paper presents the first, easy-to-use force calibration method traceable to the SI newton. Traceability is essential to enable valid comparisons with theory.
