Additional information

Ionic liquids (ILs) are the modern alternative as environmentally friendly solvents for clean chemical processes. They are considered as “designer solvents” with a choice of >1 million simple ionic liquids, each of which requires bespoke synthesis. Samples of potential liquids are expensive and the intellectual infrastructure to select and design them has not existed until this research. This paper contains a unique demonstration of how important physical properties can be measured using only microlitres of IL using a simple quartz crystal impedance analysis technique. This will enable high-throughput microfluidic systems for characterizing ionic liquids allowing easier selection for engineering applications.
