Additional information

Sol-gel derived bioactive calcium silicate glasses are one of the most promising materials for bone regeneration. There is currently a need to replace calcium nitrate as a precursor since nitrates are toxic and need to be heat treated above 380°C to fully incorporate calcium into the glass. This research demonstrated that calcium methoxyethoxide is a far superior precursor and the group has adopted this new protocol. It is expected that this new procedure will be widely adopted in the rapidly developing field of synthesizing novel polymer / sol-gel hybrids that have potential for enhanced mechanical properties in clinical use.
