Of the five criteria that justify a double-weighted research output, four are met by this edition. It is the first critical edition of a Puccini opera, and has required a fundamental reassessment of previous critical models. It involved thousands of pages of source material, dispersed in Italian libraries, with more than thirty important sources examined in the Source Descriptions and with many hundreds of Critical Notes. It has entailed re-engraving an extremely complex score (600pp in total). It has taken more than a decade to come to fruition.
