Additional information

<17>The paper opens a new perspective on our adaptive information filtering work. It develops an analogy between our user profile model and auto-poetic systems, thus explaining its particularly desirable adaptive, self-organising properties. These are demonstrated and evaluated experimentally. The work led to a 3-year, EPSRC-funded collaboration (Autoadapt EP/F035357/1) with Essex and Robert Gordon Universities, on adaptive search. Others have followed through on aspects presented here, for instance Chris McEwan's dissertation (Representation and decision making in the immune system. Diss. Napier University, 2010); and Li and Alonzo (Managing analysis context. http://doi.acm.org/10.1145/2389936.2389945) who develop a similar approach.
