Chapter 7 'Theatre and Incomprehension in The Rescue' appeared in an earlier form as 'The Strange Spaces of the Rescue' in The Conradian 29.1 (2004). The earlier version was adapted and considerably expanded (by about 1500 words) in order to put it into conversation with the overarching theme of the monograph. Therefore although there is considerable overlap, the chapter is framed and presented in a significantly different manner.
