Creativity and control: drawing for ideation and specification in the design process
The investigation was conducted over a two year period using a range of research methods and focused on 30 designers’ descriptions of their current and historical practice and on their views of how digital technology had changed their use of drawing. Significant new findings on both historical and contemporary uses of drawing by designers are presented to define the characteristics of drawing as a mechanism in not only facilitating creative thinking but also in controlling design production. Illustrated by drawings that span three decades, this paper demonstrates the continuing importance of paper-based drawing even in an era of computer-aided systems.
