Double-weighted statement

This output provides detailed insight into the relationship between the genesis of Birtwistle's operas and their narrative themes. The transcription and analysis of an extensive body of primary sources was therefore essential. Sources included unpublished musical sketches and drafts (over 4000 sides); drafts of libretti (over 2500 sides); recordings; new interviews with musicians and writers. Most of the material was located in the Paul Sacher Stiftung in Basel. Beard was also granted access to Silas Birtwistle's private collection, for which an inventory had to be prepared.
