English abstract

This chapter draws on primary manuscript sources (including extant, but hitherto unexplored scores and libretti), as well as press and iconographical sources, to examine Loïe Fuller's two interpretations of Salome (1895 and 1907). Through examination of musical sources in conjunction with other archival resources, the experiential qualities of these avant-garde dance and light spectacles are brought to the fore. The chapter provides new insight to Loïe Fuller as not only a highly individual cabaret artist, but also as a creative talent at the forefront of modern trends of ballet pantomime in turn-of-the-century Paris.
