Politische Theorie als angewandte Moralphilosophie. Die realistische Kritik [Political Theory as Applied Moral Philosophy: The Realist Critique]
This paper provides a detailed reconstruction of Geuss’s and Williams’s rejection of ideal-theoretical approaches that is motivated by the view that political philosophy is not applied moral philosophy. With respect to Geuss, I argue that all his objections are target against a notion of political philosophy that consists in the justification and application of moral principles. Therefore, his criticism leaves open the possibility of a particularist approach to political philosophy. In the second part, I scrutinise Williams’s account of a political morality that is not prior to politics, for instance, by exploring the limits of his conceptual analysis of politics.
