Additional information

Switching losses in power utilities’ voltage source converters are a major source of electrical inefficiency; therefore, their reduction is of prime importance. This paper presented a modulation technique that minimises these losses and doubles the converter’s bandwidth (i.e. smaller filtering requirements) compared to the conventional carrier-based modulation technique. This work was funded by Multimedia University, Malaysia. Follow-up funding was received (PI: Dahidah, £23.4k, Malaysian Government, Ref: 03-02-12-SF0092) to conduct further research in collaboration with the University of Sydney (coauthor: Agelidis, tel.: +61(0)293856546) to translate the method into increase the efficiency of STATCOM systems used in power grids.
