Additional information

This research, funded by BAE Systems - £29,502 (contact Dr C.Sewell tel. 01634205032) and UTC Aerospace (contact Dr M.Benarous tel. 01902624509), concerns the “more electric aircraft”, which aims to increase aircraft efficiency by replacing hydraulic and pneumatic systems with electrical systems, which have hitherto been too unreliable. This paper applies modern reliability data and test results to demonstrate that multiple, three phase, redundant drives can offer a reliable fault tolerant system. It has led to further funding under the EU FP7 programme (ACTUATION2015 – FP7-284915) - £267,863, investigating alternative motor topologies for fault tolerant aerospace actuation systems.
