Additional information

This work builds on research by Sugiyama and Nosu (1989) and Sibley (2004). In this paper the coding technique known as multiple Pulse Position Modulation (PPM) is analysed in terms of the optimum sequence of pulses in a frame. The aim is to reduce the number of detection errors, so leading to an increase in system sensitivity. Rather than just relying on detection of the pulses, a Maximum Likelihood Sequence Detection (MLSD) scheme was used to detect and correct errors. The work showed that there was indeed a optimum coding level, and research is continuing in this area.
