Additional information

Feature parameters are a new approach to characterise areal surface texture and was developed by the author and reported in this paper. Feature parameters allow characterisation of deterministic surfaces including structured surfaces which are become increasingly economically important (e.g. MEMs, fluidic devices, lens arrays, etc.). Characterisations, of this class of surface, using traditional surface texture parameters is ineffective and fails to correlate with function. The approach has been published by the International Standards Organisation under technical committee 213 in document ISO 25178:2012 part 2. The approach has been implemented in several commercial devices including Taylor Hobson, DigitalSurf, etc.
