Additional information

Gaussian filtering is fundamental to surface metrology, but cannot be applied to freeform surfaces without distortion. A link was discovered between Gaussian filtering and solutions of the Laplacian operator that models linear isotropic diffusion. By solving this diffusion operator a distortion free generalisation of Gaussian filtering for freeform surface data is achieved. This research makes a step change in surface filtration. Industry (Taylor Hobson) started to use this method to filter aspheric/freeform lenses. The method is proposed for future ISO standards. The research was sponsored by the ERC AdG: 117228 Surfund; this paper was featured by the Royal Society 2011.
