Additional information

Inter-satellite communication is currently achieved by using high frequency RF transmissions. This necessitates the use of large parabolic dishes as the transmit and receive power can be low. In this paper the possibility of using digital Pulse Position Modulation (PPM) for optical inter-satellite communications was examined. It was shown that the PPM technique is suitable for such links and further work is continuing to determine if other forms of PPM would create an advantage over digital PPM.
