Additional information

This output covers the concept creation and development of a novel automated sensor capable of measuring the position of a taut wire, traditional straightness reference typically used with manual and relatively inaccurate sensors, with high accuracy and resolution comparable with state-of-the-art interferometry systems at a fraction of the cost. This is achieved by novel application of mass produced phototransistors. The system has impacted the SOMMACT FP7 (NMP-FP 229112-2) project, through incorporation into metrology toolkits for permanent installation onto large machines requiring regular automated calibration for on-machine measurement. This would not be feasible in most cases with existing systems.
