Material Loss at the Taper Junction of Retrieved Large Head Metal-on-Metal Total Hip Replacements
The importance of the hip taper junction in the prevalence of metal ions within the blood and failure of some metal-on-metal hip replacements has been a matter of debate. This study provides clinically relevant findings of no significant correlation between the volume of material lost at the taper junction and blood metal ion levels - important information for clinical surveillance of patients with LHMOM-HRs. This is part of a major collaborative project with UCL presented at invited lectures on material loss at the taper junction at both the Royal College of Surgeons and The Royal Society of Medicine.
