Additional information

<10> When Moggi proposed the use of monads and monad transformers in 1989, it was generally regarded as a breakthrough. This article revealed that Scott and Strachey were using monadic notation already in 1971, and that the VDM semantics of PL/I in 1974 essentially used a monad transformer. The significance concerns the extent to which Moggi's theoretically-motivated approach was foreshadowed by earlier practically-motivated notation.
