Additional information

This highly cited paper (86 citations, Oct 13) applied advanced diffusion imaging methods to study visual impairment in preterm infants by probabilistic tractography. Previously, visual impairment was thought to be due entirely to retinal damage but this study showed that abnormal development in the optic tract explains visual impairment soon after birth. For the first time, this defines a new cause for visual problems and suggesting a new paradigm for therapeutic intervention; these data has since been replicated by others. This paper is published in a leading neurology journal.
