Additional information

This is first study presenting experimental data on graphene at high pressure. It resolves disagreements in literature regarding graphene’s basic mechanical properties and examines in detail dependence on sample thickness of graphene’s ability to adhere to substrates and sustain compressive stress. Study is widely cited – currently 41 citations, of which 2/3rds are from outside the high-pressure community. It is also cited in a patent application (Graphene Polymer Composite, Kinloch, Young and Novoselov, US Patent App. 20120301707). JEP obtained Royal Society funding to develop high pressure and temperature as a new method to chemically modify graphene on strength of this work.
