Significance of output:

The first study to elucidate the relationship between changes in chemical water quality and macro-invertebrate bioindicators on a multi-decadal timescale. Improvements in water chemistry followed changes in pollution control and industrial activity, but the biological response can be delayed by 2-3 decades. The value of biological monitoring of water quality may thus be diminished for grossly polluted rivers.
