Improving social technologies for recycling
Significance of output:
The world’s rapidly increasing population is putting enormous pressure on urban planning. Globally, governments are planning to house residents in properties that use less urban space; in England the increase will be 5 million by 2026. In dense housing, internal/external storage space for waste is low/non-existent and implementing recycling schemes is highly problematic and participation typically low. This paper makes recommendations across a variety of domains – architectural, technological, institutional, social - for source segregation of waste taking into account the complex constraints associated with dense housing. It was awarded the Institution of Civil Engineers Premium Baker Medal for 2010.
