This paper, on the development, morphology and propagation of dense vortices, sparked a follow-up paper (JFM, 698, 168-184), two further PhD studentships and collaboration with the fluids group in Madrid (ID_in_audit_file@uc3m.es). The work described in the paper led to an invitation by Prof A. Prosperetti (ID_in_audit_file@jhu.edu) to contribute a review paper for the Annual Reviews of Fluid Mechanics (for submission 2014). The impact of this fast-track paper was further boosted as the paper’s colour flow visualization images were selected for the journal’s cover.
