Content

The development of a new integrated systems-based approach for master-planning. This approach is better able to promote community stakeholders participation and meet the environmental changes facing towns and cities today, than existing sustainability assessment frameworks and methods. SuBeTool comprises a set of 75 Indicators, compliance requirements, and assessment system. It sets new benchmarks for sustainability during the design and construction processes. Professor Derek Croome, University of Reading, was an advisor for this research.

Questions

How to extend current sustainability assessment frameworks and methods to make more environmentally resilient places?

How to articulate a new assessment framework for masterplanning which is holistic yet adaptable to different scales and contexts?

Methods

- Desktop case studies of recent master-planning projects worldwide, involving the comparative evaluation of the structure and operation of assessment methods/systems.

- Survey of stakeholders for their involvement in the master-planning process.

- Pilot study to prototype the SuBeTool.

- Assessment of current leading sustainability assessment tools: BREEAM, LEED, CASBEE, Green Star, QSAS.

- Assessment of the final version of SuBeTool in use by Hilson-Moran, a leading international A&E consultancy.
