<28>This paper was the first to apply sampling theory to the study of social networks. We highlighted the logical problem (common in networks research) of treating a part of a large network as if it were the whole, and outlined a simulation approach to determining the biases of different sampling strategies. The work led to further collaboration between UK computer science (e.g., Franks) and ecology (e.g., Ruxton) researchers, and has been cited in journals such as Animal Behaviour, Behavioural Ecology and Sociobiology, and Trends in Ecology and Evolution.
