Significance of output:

<22>This paper gives a rigorous analysis of five mechanisms whereby using populations can provide substantial benefits over non-population based heuristics in solving combinatorial optimisation problems. Each mechanism was illustrated by a novel problem designed to capture the essence of the mechanism. It was written to be easily accessible. Gave both thorough empirical analysis and some analytical investigation. The technical parts of the analysis were describe in the appendix. This was chosen by the IEEE Intelligent Systems Society as a featured article.
