The fatigue life of welded structures is often limited by the residual stresses generated during welding. In Cambridge we have developed new weld-filler alloys that exploit transformation plasticity to achieve stress-relief benefits without needing post-weld thermal treatments and without comprising weld toughness. This paper describes work conducted to validate this approach. Commercialization and application of this technology are being explored with: ESAB AB Sweden (contact: Kamellia.Dalaei@esab.se); the MoD through a large project to create welded superbainitic armour (contact: Peter Brown <PMBrown@mail.dstl.gov.uk>); and a project with BP for the welding of undersea structures (contact: Bob Sorrell <robert.sorrell@uk.bp.com>).
