Additional information

This paper has been the basis for further work by Fray [e.g. Corrosion Science 64(2012)90; Carbon 56(2013)121] on electrolytic carbon nanomaterials. It describes how using different graphite materials gives, by lithium intercalation into graphite in a molten salt, a variety of carbon nanostructures from nanoparticles to nanotubes. These structures can also be filled with lithium-tin intermetallics as possible anodes in lithium-ion batteries. Process patented internationally by Cambridge University (US2008105561(A1), GB2013/056672) and an option has been taken by Morganite Electrical Carbon Ltd (www.morganamt.com, contact: chris.stirling @morganplc.com). Technology successfully transferred to Morganite via a TSB grant (~£1M).
