Significance of output:

This presents a novel fibre concept and a design algorithm that allow the accurate control of dispersion in fibres with a simple geometry but an extremely high nonlinearity. These fibres have tremendous potential for the all-optical processing of signals. The innovative method consolidates years of world leading research at the ORC in the area of soft glass fibres. It was validated though fabrication of a dispersion flattened fibre with record-breaking nonlinearity, 820 times higher than a conventional fibre, The fibre was subsequently used in all-optical processing experiments which have led to 6 conference publications and 5 high impact journal papers.
