Additional information

The telecom wavelength nano-scale sub-wavelength lasers demonstrated here incorporate an optimised cavity design which enables room temperature operation. Science ( 2010,328,810-11 ) highlighted this achievement of practical operation of sub-wavelength nano-lasers small enough to be used to effect high-speed data connections between specialised on-chip electronic processors. PhysicsOrg.com ( May 3 2010) emphasised the opportunity enabled by this work for extremely dense packing – of order 1 billion devices on a 3 inch wafer. MIT Technology Review ( May 6 2010 ) underlined the importance of this first realisation of a sub-wavelength laser not requiring cryogenic cooling.
