Russell Garwood is the recipient of a research fellowship from the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851. Eight 1851 Research Fellowships are awarded a year, and “are intended to give early career scientists or engineers of exceptional promise the opportunity to conduct a research project of their own instigation; an ultimate objective is to contribute to the knowledge base required for a healthy and innovative national culture.” As part of his fellowship Russell conducts research on a range of palaeontology topics and the application of X-ray/computation techniques within the Earth Sciences. These include the three-dimensional, CT-based reconstruction of a range of early land animals (primarily insects and arachnids), similar studies on a range of earth materials, and the development of X-ray techniques to allow non-destructive 3D elemental mapping of geological materials.
