Three-dimensional analysis of functionally graded plates
This paper provides an advanced numerical strategy for composites widely used in aerospace. Composites are multi-phase materials with varying phase volume fractions. The most familiar functionally graded materials are compositionally graded from a refractory ceramic to a metal, which can incorporate incompatible functions of each component. This project was supported by EPSRC (grant P/E050573/1) and led to collaboration with the internationally-leading group headed by Prof Sladek (jan.sladek@savba.sk) and a further 15 publications. Follow on funding from TWI Ltd (UK) enabled this method to be successfully applied to the materials processing technology, Surfi-Sculpt™.
