Spatio-temporal development of the endothelial glycocalyx layer and its mechanical property in vitro.
This work was funded by a Royal Academy of Engineering Global Research Fellowship and a MRC-EPSRC Discipline Bridging Initiative grant. It’s the first reported study on cell membrane surface molecules using a combined imaging (confocal microscopy) and mechanical probing (AFM) approach. It was presented to American Society of Mechanical Engineers (2011) and Bioengineering Society UK (2012). It led to the award of the PhD degree to Dr Bai (2012) and a postdoctoral fellowship for her in Bioengineering at GeorgTech, Atlanta. It attracted an industry funded PhD studentship (2011) and a China Scholarship Council PhD studentship (2012) to continue this research.
