Additional information

The evolution of large waves in the open ocean is non-linear, particularly for steep wave events. This paper used an approximate method to analyse the shape and magnitude of extreme waves. We quantified the well-known change to the shape of a wave-group during an extreme wave event, comparing results to numerical simulations and wave-flume data. By introducing a new time-scale for the non-linear evolution of large waves, we showed that these evolve much slower than they would under linear evolution. The significance lies in the scientific understanding of extreme waves, vital for the design of marine structures.
