Additional information

This paper was based directly on an invited keynote lecture I gave at the 2009 conference on Turbine Cooling (Antalya, Turkey) organised by the International Centre for Heat and Mass Transfer. An innovative application of an optimiser to a tight hair-pin bend (common in turbine cooling) was presented. We used this to design the bend with the lowest loss coefficient (patent US 20110058958) used in the design of a cooling system for a Trent 1000 aerofoil. The paper led to follow on funding in internal cooling (TSB grant SAMULET WP 1.3.3) at Oxford.
