Additional information

The paper introduces a novel concept, applicable to gas turbines for power generation, that fully integrates the combustor and nozzle guide vanes. The concept is challenging the conventional design wisdom of the gas turbine hot-end. By eliminating the vanes, the cooling requirements are significantly reduced, the design is simplified and both manufacture and maintenance costs considerably reduced. The technology is under consideration for application in next generation combined cycles which target 65 % thermal efficiency. The paper received the ASME Best Paper Award and the concept has been patented internationally (JP2009277746). Currently under experimental validation at MHI and Oxford University.
