Additional information

Parallel transmission of data using multiple optical sources and detectors (optical MIMO) is an area of rapidly growing interest, in the area of fibre and free space communications. This is the first paper to report the detailed design and constraints for an LED lighting system that also transmits data 'in parallel' by sending different data on each LED using line of sight transmission. In the future such systems can be used to augment the data capacity provided by the congested RF spectrum. Key concepts taken up as part of EPSRC programme grant EP/K00042X/1 (~£4.5M, £775K to Oxford).
