Additional information

This paper is the outcome of collaboration with Prof. White (Shell EMI Chair of Offshore Engineering, University of Western Australia) while he was on sabbatical leave in Oxford in 2011. It shows that industry-standard design guidance in this area is unconservative, and provides a more rational and comprehensive set of solutions for use by practising engineers. The new results have already been applied to pipeline designs in Europe and Australia (Advanced Geomechanics, contact details available).
