Additional information

The bend-state in pi-cells shows high-speed switching response, but is difficult to stabilise. Using synchronous illumination to form a polymer network it was possible to enhance the stability of the state without substantially limiting the dynamic range of the switching. This is a major improvement, leading to the potential to exploit this mode in advanced display technology. The concept of synchronized polymer stabilisation for liquid crystal technology was also patented (US patent no. US 2011/0037938 A1 (pub. 17 Feb. 2011)), and subsequently sold to Merck (the world’s main supplier of liquid crystal materials).
