Additional information

This is the first piece of work to observe directly the transitions when switching between states in a liquid crystal pi-cell. The dynamics had not been investigated before, and understanding the behaviour is key to exploiting pi-cells in display technology. It was shown that two possible mechanisms take place, one where the strength half defect is in the centre of the device, and one where it is close to the device surface. It represents a step change in the observation of switching mechanisms in liquid crystal devices, and fed into joint work with Samsung (contact details available).
