This paper presents a new model for ice lens formation in soils based on the concept of geometric undercooling. It arose out of a multidisciplinary project with groups in Mathematics at Oxford and Geologists at Yale. It is an example of technology transfer in which techniques we have developed for modelling engineering materials have been applied to a different class of material and system.
