The work was one of a collection of half a dozen key influencing ideas in this subfield of software engineering. The work is in the area of generating state machines from scenario descriptions. This work is the first to provide support for generating hierarchical state machines. Hierarchy is crucial for readability and refinement. Paper is highly cited.
