Double-weighted statement

The thesis of Pretty is a bold revision of established ideas on film aesthetics, requiring a new intellectual history of film theory. Its research took seven years, including archival work in the US, UK and Spain, and the book is 390pp. Its interdisciplinary materials range from classical philosophy through nineteenth-century aesthetics to contemporary critical theory, and link cinema to architecture, art history and geopolitics. It uses extensive primary sources: films from 24 countries (including Cuba, India, Mali, China, and Germany); international film reviews, popular magazines, trade journals and scholarship; and film history from the silent era to the present.
