Additional information

This paper characterizes mechanical properties of a hollow steel foam sphere, and applies calibrated plasticity and failure approaches for the simulation of steel foam components. The characterization encompassed compressive, tensile and shear properties, requiring the development of testing standards for tension and shear experiments. Novel simulations incorporated the stochastic variation of material properties, as well as pertinent failure criteria. The research also provides guidance on tests and models needed for the virtual prototyping of metallic foam components. It impacted the ISO 13314 standard for testing of metallic foams and was supported by Fraunhofer Institute (Germany) and MER Corporation (USA).
